Dogs Trust is disappointed that the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill has been dropped due to the prorogation of Parliament.

We urge the Government to reintroduce the bill in the new Parliamentary session and thank all the MPs who have supported this bill along the way.

The bill was set to significantly increase sentences for animal cruelty offences and once it became law, those convicted of animal cruelty offences would have faced a maximum jail term of five years, rather than the paltry six months in place at the moment.

We will continue our fight to tackle animal cruelty and will work with the Government to do so.
