The position is a joint position between the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in collaboration with the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke). The research, expertise and teaching field of the professorship is Animal Welfare. In this research context, animal welfare is defined as the animal’s experience of its own mental and physical state. The position will focus on the welfare of domestic animals in a multidisciplinary environment within HOH Helsinki One Health network organization.
The successful candidate is expected to have experience in research and teaching of animal welfare science and relevant approaches such as ethology, stress physiology and on-farm welfare assessment. Potential research areas include development of methods to evaluate animal welfare utilizing new technologies, linking animal welfare to longevity and health of high producing farm animals, genetics of behaviour, and animal welfare in relation to nutrition, health and pain. The candidate should be able to work within an interdisciplinary research environment, including veterinary sciences, animal nutrition and management, animal breeding and genetics, and automated data collection and modelling. The successful candidate is expected to have an interest in a wide variety of domestic animals, and perform research and teaching activities related to both production and companion/hobby animals.
